Apixaban is a selective inhibitor of Factor Xa (FXa) and does not require ant thrombin III for its antithrombotic effects. It inhibits both free and clot-bound FXa, as well as prothrombin’s activity. While apixaban does not directly affect platelet aggregation, it indirectly inhibits thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. By inhibiting FXa, apixaban reduces thrombin generation and subsequent thrombus formation.
